UAlbany Research Computing Grid
From Research IT
There is an opportunity to harness the computing cycles of idle personal computers in teaching classrooms and public computing access areas. These resources, when not utilized by instructors or students, can be used to support the research community.
In partnership with: ITS - System Management Operations ITS - Client Services Outcomes: By installing Condor on each of the computers in the teaching classrooms and public computing access areas we will be able to make these machines discoverable using the same software we have been using on the dedicated research computing resources. A researcher can then submit jobs to be run on the multiple computers now made available by the harvesting of these idle computers in addition to the dedicated computational resources currently used by the research community.
Implementation date: Spring 2008 Semester: Initial Internal ITS Testing and piloting in Arts & Sciences B13 computer teaching lab; Summer 2008: Extensive testing on computers in teaching laboratories; Fall 2008 semester: Implementation on all ITS managed systems in the public computing access areas and teaching classrooms. Usage deployment to the research user community.
