Prometheus was named for the greek god who rebeled against Zeus and gave fire to mortals on earth. Becuase of this we felt appropriate to name out first grid attached cluster prometheus. Once relegated to the supercomuters at large, specialized universities, grid computing brings massivly parallalel computation to all researchers big or small.
Operational History
First brought online in Fall 2005 with the generic name "Dell Cluster" it was used for globus experimentation. In the Spring of 2005 it was recast as prometheus and became part of the larger NYSGrid or OpenScienceGrid initiative.
